Leo poured a cup of coffee as he and Mikey sat down at the table. Mikey finally got Sophie to go back to bed after a huge nightmare she had experienced. Leo thought about his kid brother. Mikey had returned home about five months ago with his daughter, Sophie. Leo suddenly realized he hadn't really talked to his baby brother since he'd returned.
Mikey had changed so much since he had left just over five years ago. Before, he had been a happy go lucky turtle. Mikey in short was a pizza loving, comic reading, fun loving party turtle. He was so different now. He was still Mikey, but he was different. Now a father, Mikey had been handed a mountain of responsibility. Five years ago, Leo would've never seen Mikey as a dad.
Other things were different too. Mikey was broken. Not only had he been captured and tortured for two months by The Shredder, but had watched his wife die by Splinter's own flesh and blood. Leo felt a shiver go through his shell thinking about Karai. Even when the truth had been revealed to her, Karai chose The Shredder over the Hamato clan. Leo knew Master Splinter still blamed himself for that too. Mikey had also lost many memories from the induced seizures Shredder had induced to Mikey for his own twisted pleasure.
"So Mikey..." Leo started, realizing the silence was getting to him. Mikey looked up attentively. "How do you feel...you know, being back in New York and all?" He asked casually. Mikey knew, however that Leo had a reason for asking him this.
"Truth be told dude, it feels pretty good." Mikey answered. Leo seemed to be a bit surprised at the blatant answer. "It feels good to stop running; from The Shredder, the Kraang, from Karai. I was a bit anxious at first, thinking Karai was still alive. I feel happy that Sophia finally can have a safe place to grow up. I'm happy that I'm not on my own anymore."
"Well, we're glad to finally have our kid brother back home; safe and sound." Leo replied, walking to the counter to pour another cup of coffee.
"I hated being on my own man. Especially after losing Marie. My whole world seemed to shatter. At one point, I even considered seppuku."
"Michelangelo..." Leo scolded lightly in a sympathetic tone.
"I know, but I found a reason to live. Sophia. She's the only reason I got through that rough period. She's my light. Every time she giggled, laughed, she somehow made my burden lighter. When we finally got to Canada, the Rikers really helped me through the last bit of initial grief I carried. They really helped me take care of Sophie too."
"I'm glad." Leo said, still hung up on the fact his baby brother had at one point been in so much grief that he had considered seppuku. Of course, his brothers had all thought Mikey had died. But knowing this consideration now almost killed Leo inside.
"And when I finally found Marie on the Astral Plain, that in itself helped a lot. Although it's not the same as having her here, it helps."
"So that's why you meditate?" Leo said, finally realizing why Michelangelo had been so serious about meditation since his return. Before, Mikey could barely meditate for twenty minutes without flinching or being disciplined for not applying himself.
"I thought about you guys a lot. Whenever I needed help, I tried to think about what you guys would do. I thought about Donnie when I needed help taking care of Sophie when she was hurt or sick. I thought about Master Splinter whenever I was stressed about being a single parent or needed his wisdom. I thought about Raph when I trained, especially when I had to rebuild my strength after being with the Shredder."
"Did you ever think about me?" Leo asked curiously.
"Yeah, I thought about you when I was put into a spot of leadership. When Marie was pregnant, when Sophie hatched, when Marie was killed and when I was forced to flee from Karai." Mikey acknowledged. Leo found himself absolutely speechless. His kid brother had really grown up. He was no kid anymore, Mikey was a man, or at least an adult mutant ninja turtle.
Leo and Mikey have a late conversation, as Leo finds out how grown up his "baby brother" really has become. Sophie is my OC (She's Mikey's daughter.) This is where I'd put a disclaimer if anyone thought I actually owned TMNT.
